Special Luxury Trip by Pugmarks to Corbett National Reserve
|
|
Corbett is one of the oldest national parks in India. The natural uniqueness of the area was recognised
long ago and so in 1936 Corbett attained the distinction as the first national park to be established in mainland Asia. It
is named after Jim Corbett who hunted man eating tigers and then became one of the best conservationist.
Corbett National Park lies in two districts – Nainital and Pauri – in the hill state
of Uttaranchal in northern India. It covers an area of 521 sq. km and together with the neighbouring Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary
and Reserve Forest areas, forms the Corbett Tiger Reserve over 1288 sq. km.
Its geographical location between the Himalayas and the terai, and the streams, rivers and ridges
crisscrossing the terrain, present Corbett with a remarkable variety of landscapes. This vivid mosaic of habitats –
wet and dry, plain and mountainous, gentle and rugged, forests and grasslands – supports numerous plant and animal species,
representing Himalayan as well as plains kinds. The most famous of Corbett’s wild residents are the Bengal Tiger and
the Asiatic Elephant, but with about 600 species of avifauna Corbett is one of the richest bird regions of India.
Corbett has more then 575 Species of birds, 25 Species of repltiles, 50 species of mammals and 7
species of amphibians abundant food sources and shelter and protection from human disturbance for over half a century. Some
of the major mammals that can found in Corbett national park are Chital, Elephant, Wild pig, Barking Deer, Sambar, Tiger,
Common Langur, Rhesus Macaque, Jackal, Leopard Panther etc
The latest Tiger census found that tigers in Corbett had gone up from 137 in 2001-02 to
164 in 2007. And in what is good news for the tiger, the curious situation has also led to a first of its kind
inter-state co-operation between Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, with police and forest officials meeting regularly to make
sure tigers in the buffer areas with human habitation are not killed.
